Project „Mother and Child Reunion“ in Sri Lanka

By submitting DNA tests on site, the mothers can be included in the same database as their children. The more DNA results from adopted persons and biological mothers are stored in the database, the more hits there can be. This is because DNA tests are often the only way to find out about a person's origins.

Back to the Roots finances these tests and the media campaign in Sri Lanka exclusively with donations. Affected mothers are sensitised through newspaper advertisements and flyers. Stigmatisation and taboo still play a major role in preventing mothers from talking about what has happened. Thanks to the campaign, the mothers learn how they can get in touch with the Back to the Roots liaison person by phone. Over 50 mothers have been in the database since 2020. Over six reunions have already been arranged.

Many mothers say ‘Before I die, I want to hold my child in my arms again’ when talking to Back to the Roots. Thanks to the Mother and Child Reunion project, many people have the hope that this wish could be fulfilled.
